This Surgical Scrub Technician is located at the Blackfeet Community Hospital in Browning, MT, under the Nursing Department, within the Surgical Service Division. This position provides cleaning, packaging, and sterilizing services to other departments throughout the hospital and the Heart Butte Clinic.

Duties

Performs daily surgical scrub duties under close supervision of the Surgeon and Registered Nurse (RN) acting as circulator. Prepares and plans for assigned surgical cases by: selecting appropriate instrument sets, sutures, sponges, draping packages, equipment etc. This includes inspecting each package for indications of proper sterilization and integrity of packaging. Scrub technician is responsible to perform surgical counts with the circulating nurse as necessary throughout the procedure and passes instruments, sponges, sutures, etc. to the surgeon. Provides "emergency call-back" after hours for emergency surgery; required to be within 30 minutes of hospital to respond to emergency call. Assess and maintains proper functioning capability of surgical instruments. Responsible to report equipment in need of repair to the designated person.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Your resume must demonstrate specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-04: (6) six months of general experience AND (6) six months of specialized experience. GS-05: (1) one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level. GS-06: (1) one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. General Experience(l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. -- OR -- Education and Training For GS-04: Successful completion of (2) two years of study that included at least (12) twelve semester hours in subjects related to the position. For GS-05: Successful completion of a full (4) four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least (24) twenty four semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-04 Level: Knowledge of aseptic technique and of operative procedures. Assist in evaluating the needs and wishes of patient undergoing surgical procedures. In conjunction with the circulating nurse, perform sharp, sponge, and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Set up and monitor specialized equipment used during operative procedures. Recognize adverse signs in emergency situations. Knowledge of safety factors in operating room. Duties include stocking, replenishing, and preparing supplies and equipment for use. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-05 Level: Select appropriate instrument, sets, sutures, sponges, draping packages, equipment, etc. Inspect package for proper sterilization. Perform surgical count during procedure; passes instruments, sponges, sutures, etc., to the surgeon. Restock and order inventory. Maintain aseptic techniques on assigned surgical cases. Perform quality control data and inspect instruments disassembly. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-06 Level: Responsible for preparation of the operating room for a variety of simple to complex surgical procedures with a thorough knowledge of all specialty instrument sets, supplies, and medical equipment. Anticipate the surgeon's needs for instruments, equipment, and supplies by adhering to surgeon's case preference cards. Utilize superior aseptic technique following the standards and guidelines. Responsible for the accountability for surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure. Perform the proper use and disposal of sharps, blood, and waste products per policy. Handle pathology specimens with care to prevent damage or loss, provides accurate information to the circulating nurse for proper labeling. Follow policy for handling, cleaning, and re-stringing instrumentation. Assist with room readiness for the next patient and/or room preparation. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
