Duties
Maintains a thorough working knowledge of fire prevention techniques, manuals, regulations and local, State, and Federal fire prevention ordinances and building codes.
Develops material and provides situational and classroom training in installation fire prevention activities.
Maintains reports and records concerning the fire prevention program activities.
Investigates new and unusual work and living situations to detect and eliminate fire hazards.
Furnishes technical advice on fire prevention problems in answer to specific questions pertaining to national and local fire codes and directives.
Conducts extinguisher surveys and assures that the proper type and amount of extinguishers are installed and inspected as required.
Requirements
- Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 1 year by a current permanent Army employee.
- Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
- As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires a work schedule of 60-hours per work week, 120-hours per pay period and incumbent is required to work one night over each week.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires the incumbent to participate in a DOD Physical Fitness Training Program.
- Incumbent must meet the certification requirements IAW Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program Manual, DOD Instruction 6055.6.
- Incumbent must have and maintain ALL of the below certifications through the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Cert. System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board):
- Fire Inspector I and II, Fire Instructor I, Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Technician AND State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician

Current Department of Army Civilian Employees
In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Conducting fire/safety inspections to identify, reduce or eliminate hazards that cause fires; (2) Developing, implementing, and/or providing training in fire protection and prevention; and (3) Minor preventive checks on fire protection systems such as: Fire Alarm Systems, Sprinkler Systems and Fire Extinguishers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade level position in the federal service (GS-07).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the below listed certifications certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date:
Fire Inspector I and II
Fire Instructor I
Firefighter I and II
HAZMAT Technician
State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician

FIREFIGHTER SECONDARY RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This position is covered as a secondary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c)(CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS) when it is filled by an individual who transfers directly from a primary or another secondary firefighting position with no break in service as a firefighter to this position. Firefighter retirement coverage of the selectee depends upon his or her individual work history.
