In this position, you will operate and maintain historic steam and diesel locomotives for passenger excursions of up to 120 miles roundtrip on a high-speed, heavy grade mainline railroad, as well as operating these trains around the rail yard and in routine railroad switching.
Duties
Serve as a qualified as a locomotive inspector of historic steam and diesel locomotives and historic railroad cars in accordance with the Federal Railway Administration and Railroad regulations, specifications, and procedures
Ensure that train operations, railyard and mainline, operate in accordance with all applicable National Park Service (NPS), Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC} and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) policies and regulations
Assist the Railroad Operations Supervisor with development of the park railroad safety program, including
training, program administration, and qualifying paid and volunteer engineers and firemen
Operate a wide range of locomotive controls including numerous switches and valves, throttle, reverser and train and engine brakes and is required to manually, as needed, hand fire steam locomotives, including cutting coal in the
tender
Requirements

- A valid state driver's license is required.
- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
Qualifications
In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess the ability to do the work of a locomotive engineer with only occasional oversight of your work by a supervisor. Your experience must include operating and maintaining rolling stock, track cars, and steam and diesel locomotives. The locomotives were operated as part of passenger excursions, as well as in routine yard switching. You must have inspected and assisted in the repair of locomotives and railroad cars in accordance with regulations and specifications; and maintained logs as required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Your resume must detail fully how you meet the experience described above. Failure to do so may lead to your disqualification.
In addition, you must be able to obtain and maintain a Northeast Operating Rules Advisory Committee (NORAC) Locomotive Engineer certificate within the first 90 days of employment.
