About the Position: This is a Health Technician (Surgical) position located in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Duties
Serve as surgical technologist with core competencies in preparing and presenting necessary supplies and instrumentation for surgical procedures.
Follow established policies and techniques when handling instruments, sponges, sutures, and surgical equipment; observes for break in sterile technique.
Responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation.
Demonstrate knowledge of step-by step progress of specific surgical procedures and displays dexterity in the use of the required instrumentation.
Rotate among various duty assignments in the department including decontamination, instrument preparation, and storage.
Ensure all needed records including radiology, laboratory results, outside records, and consultations are available to the provider.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 35 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires to wear medical attire.
- This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing one or more of the following: (1) assisting with the assembly of surgical equipment and instruments in the operating room; (2) preparing equipment and supplies based on specific surgical procedure(s); (3) assisting with the sterilization of surgical instruments while maintaining a sterile operating room; or (4) assisting surgeon or staff members during surgical procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted
