This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Food for Health of People and the Environment Lab (FHPEL) in Beltsville, MD. In this position, you will be be responsible for planning and evaluating the effectiveness of projects for FHPEL which include controlled human nutrition feeding studies at the Human Studies Facility (HSF) and the development and maintenance of FoodData Central (FDC).

Duties

Plan, design, conduct, and monitor nutrition research. Provide recommendations for the implementation of new approaches to nutrition studies. Plan and implement long-range plans for controlled human nutrition feeding studies. Manage and maintain large database containing food and nutrient profiles. Maintain large or complex data sets in food and nutrient databases for use by scientific and professional groups, academia, and the public. Design a variety of procedures for preparation of food that is palatable while maintaining the integrity of the study requirements for controlled human nutrition feeding studies. Supervise ordering of food and other materials necessary for food service according to specific details of the study menus. Monitor facility expenses to ensure they are within the budgeted amount by reviewing status of funds reports and taking corrective action when necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Time in grade: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade. Basic Requirements Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels: Bachelor's (or higher) degree or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. AND In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualification requirements as stated below: GS-13 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience overseeing the planning, designing, and conducting of human metabolic studies; managing and maintaining large-scale food and nutrient databases; and administering accounting, budgeting, and forecasting for research projects and operations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
