You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN LEADER in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will instruct workers on unusual work steps or requirements. You will maintain, replace, test and reset circuit breakers in switch and substations, at shore installations including pier mounted unit substations and vaults. You will install and maintain different types of high or low voltage electrical distribution equipment. You will determine excessive current flow or other signs of improper electrical systems. You will troubleshoot cable systems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalance, or cable breaks, using such common electrical test devices as voltmeter, ohmmeter, and megger.

Requirements

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination and annually thereafter.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You may be required to obtain, within 12 months of onboarding, and maintain, a Class “B” a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain CPR certification.
  • You may be required complete, within 12 months of onboarding, Confined Space Safety Course A-493-0030 through the Naval Safety and Environmental Training Center.
  • You may be required to perform shift work, work overtime and/or be “called back”.
  • You may be required to obtain, within 12 months of onboarding, and maintain, current licenses to operate Folk Lift, High Lift (JLG), Bucket Truck and/or construction equipment.
  • You may be carry a duty cell phone.

Qualifications

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1)Performs a full range of maintenance, operation, repair, installation and troubleshooting to the electrical systems; 2) Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and maintenance and repair manuals to repair or replace existing electrical systems, controls and equipment; 3) Makes operational tests and adjustments as necessary; 4) Demonstrates knowledge and skills of high voltage electrical components and wiring consisting of 480 volts up to 13,800 volts and where and how controls are installed and operated; 5) Uses electrical test devices such as ohmmeters, volt meters, meggers, and continuity checkers to perform basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, opens, shorts, insulation breakdowns and grounds, and 6) Passes on instructions Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.
