Responsible for the management and direction of a complex and multi-faceted program of interpretation/education, visitor services, and cultural resources management.

Duties

This position is the Interpretation and Cultural Resource Program Manager/Supervisory Park Ranger (I) at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. This position is one of three program managers reporting to the Superintendent. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of interpretation and cultural resource management functions that provide for the operation, visitor management, and protection of 1,784 acres with diverse natural and cultural resources. The incumbent provides supervision, leadership and mentoring for a permanent Interpretive Specialist and 2-4 seasonal interpretive workers. This position serves as the park point of contact for partnerships and manages the visitor center operations. In addition to a full range of interpretation and cultural resource management responsibilities, the incumbent is expected to foster good relations among other park programs and work closely with other members of the management team to complete short- and long-range planning and manage park operations on an ongoing basis. Physical Demands: Work sometimes requires strenuous physical exertion, such as hiking and cross-country skiing. Requires standing, walking over rough and uneven surfaces, driving a variety of vehicles (sedan, 4-wheel drive, ATV) and lifting moderately heavy (50-80 lbs.) objects. Much of the work involves sedentary office assignments. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work ranges between sub-artic climate conditions (sub-zero temperatures, high winds, snow, etc.) and hot summer days with temperatures infrequently reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Park ranger - interpreters connect people to parks. They play a key role in ensuring that visitors have a meaningful, satisfying, and safe park experience, help visitors decide how to spend their time in the park, and inform them about the wonders that await their discovery. Park ranger - interpreters are specially trained to engage the public so that each park visitor can find a personal connection with the meanings and values found in the places and stories of that park. They help visitors explore the many dimensions of parks by introducing them to a variety of perspectives. By providing the opportunity for visitors to care about the places they visit, they promote stewardship and the opportunity for those visitors to care for park resources. National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/22/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience include coordinating, managing, or directing interpretive programs; developing educational programs; managing interpretive staff or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated graduate education with major field of study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement, police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources, or course work in other appropriate fields that clearly provided me with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position of Park Ranger. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
