About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Serve as an instructor and counselor for a post-high school and college preparatory level course focused on student success for a diverse group of students. Conduct academic counseling sessions: employing active listening skills, establishing rapport, developing problem solving and goal setting competencies, and providing referrals. Attend, conduct, and foster professional development opportunities within and outside the Academic Department, USMAPS, or USMA to share and broaden teaching and counseling knowledge and experience. Conduct supplementary instruction and workshops for students requiring additional assistance. Use the most appropriate classroom teaching methods, including lectures, small-group discussions, applications, demonstrations, etc. Serve as a faculty representative on various committees. May supervise a student extracurricular activity such as an athletic, academic, or service club.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: All US Citizens This is a full-time permanent position in the Excepted Service. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Instructor / Counselor of Student Success: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. (You must include a copy of your transcripts with your application package.) OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four-year course of study described in A above. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Providing instruction in student learning and development; and 2) Conducting student counseling sessions. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Student Affairs, STEM Education, Counseling, and Psychology, OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) in the following four areas: 1) Academic Accomplishment: An earned bachelor's degree (master's degree or Ph.D./Ed.D. preferred) in an education field, such as Developmental Education, Student Affairs, STEM Education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field, supported by course work indicating knowledge of theories, methods, and practices applicable to teaching and counseling. Evidence of ongoing professional development in the areas of teaching and counseling/academic coaching is a plus. 2) Teaching: Experience successfully teaching learning and performance enhancement strategies applicable to college students and the conditions and practices that facilitate holistic development (e.g., study strategies, self-regulation, performance psychology, goal setting, first-year experience) to students from diverse backgrounds needing remediation in preparation for a four-year college program. Ability to create lesson/workshop content and to assess student learning and development. 3) Service/Administration: Skill in serving (participation and contribution) in a post high school/college level academic environment through committees and extracurriculars. Ability to execute administrative duties. 4) Coaching/Counseling/Mentoring: Experience effectively counseling/coaching students in a learning support role. Ability to support personal growth and character development of students in and out of the classroom and serve as a mentor for future West Point cadets.
