About the Position: This position is located in the 355th Medical Group - Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Complete diagnostic analysis of biological specimens in the areas of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, or urinalysis. Collect and maintain chain of custody for legal blood alcohol tests (BAT) specimens, aircraft incident specimens, and drug urinalysis specimens. Correlate laboratory markers with certain pathological states to verify abnormal results and minimize complex diagnostic problems. Execute quality control (QC), interpret data, and take appropriate actions according to local policies and procedures. Monitor the performance of tests for the clinic laboratory utilizing complex automated systems. Execute steps for instrument setup, function verification and operation for instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Tuberculosis screening is required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules

  • A pre-placement medical examination is required. Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. This position has an individual occupational requirement that requires qualifying specialized experience in: A. Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings OR B, Technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting laboratory testing in the following areas: chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology and/or serology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Microbiology, Chemistry, or Clinical Laboratory Science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. AND Certification Required: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment: This position requires a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification. Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
