You will serve as a SAFETY ENGINEER in the SYSTEMS SAFETY AND CERTIFICATION DIVISION, OCEAN ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will serve as the senior safety systems specialist representing Ocean Engineering and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on taskings as directed by NAVSEA PMS395 and other government organizations. You will direct and approve highly complex safety analyses of all ship's systems based on mission objectives. You will chair and participate in technical and analytical data exchange meetings with NAVSEA, senior Navy Fleet and Medical Officers, CNO/OPNAV, and prime contractor personnel. You will review major configuration changes to existing projects, contractor, and other government agency safety reliability analyses for critical interference and overall project coverage. You will support the design development of new projects by participation on the senior design review board and risk management board. You will identify potential areas of increased risk associated with technology advancement, production execution, installation and assembly, test, and evaluation.

• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer conducting system and safety analyses to assure critical system level performance and safety requirements are met to achieve mission objectives for ship systems. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
