This position is assigned to Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch (N921); Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR, N92); Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR N9); Commander, Navy Region Southeast (CNRSE), Navy Installations Command (CNIC); located at NAS Whiting Field . Incumbent serves as the lead lifeguard and is responsible for safeguarding the lives of persons at the assigned work area. Incumbent assists with Aquatic training, education, and general support at the installation.

Requirements

  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements including successful completion of background investigation.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, without a fixed schedule. When outdoors sun and eye irritation exposure may occur.
  • Irregular working hours may be required to include early shift, late shift, evenings, weekends and holidays when the need arises.
  • Level 1: Must obtain the following certification within 30 days of hire: Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional and Standard First Aid by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
  • Wearing of protective clothing and equipment may be required as situations warrant.
  • May be required to lift and carry swimmers varying in weight and size.
  • Must be ready to respond to emergency situations at all times.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION - Knowledge of recreation equipment and use in an aquatics setting. - Knowledge of pool and water safety rules. - Knowledge of general aquatic facility upkeep and maintenance (e.g., cleaning, minor equipment repairs). - Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazardous situations and identify a patron's need for assistance immediately. - Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area to ensure they meet environmental health standards. - Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing - Ability to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials (e.g., cleaning agents, pool chemicals, blood). - Skill in providing customer service to a diverse group of people - Skill to act decisively and immediately in any situation which could result in harm to a patron by identifying a patron in distress. - Skill to tactfully, but forcefully, provide instruction on water safety, facility rules and regulations, and enforce them. - Skill to conduct pool chemical testing, adjust chemical imbalances and document the results. - Skill to exercise control over a large group of people. 2. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS Incumbent works under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager, and or Fitness Director. Assignments are to be received orally and as written policy directives for which the incumbent is responsible for independently completing. Review of the work is through evaluation of assigned programs in terms of degree of participation, safety, training, property accountability and condition of facilities. 3. GUIDELINES Guidelines consist of standard instructions, reference material, texts, and manuals, but are not limited to, CNICINST 1710.3, CNICINST 5300.2, OPNAVINST 1700.9E, CNRSE Fleet Readiness Policies, local policy, procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs), Fitness, Sports & Aquatics Support program standards as well as Command and internal instructions. Generally accepted procedures found in the aquatics and fitness industry and adopted by reputable organizations (e.g., American Red Cross, American College of Sports Medicine and American Council on Exercise) are used.The incumbent uses judgment in choosing available guidelines to specific issues and makes recommendations for changes. 4. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work includes extended hours of sitting and standing and requires prolonged hours in the pool during swim lessons or other activities. Work involves frequent lifting or pulling of pool equipment, cleaning supplies, and program participants. Applicant must be able to maintain physical ability to complete the swim and rescue skill portion of their respective certifying agency. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50lbs independently and objects over 50lbs with assistance is required, while performing normal duties in the area. May perform work that poses physical demands beyond normal requirements during rescue.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. 5. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in indoor or outdoor aquatics facilities. Indoor aquatics facilities are subjected to high humidity. Outdoor aquatics/waterfront facilities are subjected to variable weather conditions. 6. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries and State Criminal History Repository Check (CNACI) background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age upon hiring and renew every 5 years. Required to work varied work schedules to include splits shifts, split days off nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license in situations where use of vehicle is required such as open waterfronts. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain the following nationally recognized certifications within ninety (90) days of hire: - Lifeguard Training Certification in accordance with CNICINST 1710.3;- CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Providers; - First Aid to include Automated External Defibrillator Certification; and - Blood Borne Pathogens. - Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Preferred Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
