Duties

As a Chemist you will: Responsible for identifying, defining, and selecting specific problems for review, study and determining what appear to be the most fruitful investigations and approaches to the problem area; Formulate hypotheses and develop and carries out the review of chemical studies, coping with novel, difficult, and unexpected problems; Perform a key role in resolving issues that significantly affect scientific programs; Lead complex chemical analysis, identification, and testing of various and specific substances in a variety of human and/or tobacco product sample matrices formulating systematic approaches to complex problems in the field of chemistry/biochemistry; Extend and modify approaches, precedents, and methods to solve difficult chemical problems.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: 1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. or 2. Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: applying knowledge of the use and capabilities of laboratory instrumentation to include understanding of the chemical principles, theories, practices, and established methodologies sufficient to evaluate and understand synergistic relationship of unrelated properties. To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: developing and carrying out the review of chemical studies in the field of chemistry or biochemistry to identify and solve problems. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
