This position is organizationally aligned to Facilities Management Service, located at VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville, IL (550) - a Level 3 Complexity VHA Facility. The incumbent functions as a Pipefitter and performs plumber duties within the Utility System Repair Operations (USRO) Shop, Operations and Maintenance, Facility Management Division.

Duties

Installation, maintenance, repair and modification of steam, water, gas, piped oxygen, nitrous oxide, air, vacuum, storm drainage, sanitary drainage, chilled water piping and related equipment, refrigeration piping and related equipment, as well as the fixtures, devices, and appliances served by these utility systems. Installs, maintains, modifies, and repairs steam piping from the high-pressure steam distribution piping to the steam traps, steam operated fixtures and fittings on high, medium, and low-pressure steam equipment. Installs Dietetic equipment such as steam tables, kettles, dish machines, and coffee urns; also sterilizers, autoclaves, heat exchangers, condensate pumps, temperature controls, water stills and heating coils. Repairs leaks, replaces fittings and flange gaskets, repacks valves, replaces pressure gauges and other related appurtenances. Installs, maintains, modifies and repairs all types of plumbing and related plumbing equipment. Maintaining and modifying a wet and dry sprinkler system and sprinkler installation. Maintaining water softeners, fire hydrants, oxygen, vacuum, air, and nitrous oxide systems; also storm drains, sanitary drains, and equipment such as sinks, bathtubs, water closets, urinals, drinking fountains, garbage disposals, dishwashing machines, water heaters, pumps, lavatories, stoves, dental equipment, acid eyewash dump showers, plastic piping, etc. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday / 7:00 am - 3:30 pm / 3 positions available Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD24230A Physical Requirements: Work is of heavy nature performed in hard-to-reach places. Standing, stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling, and climbing positions, frequently from tiring and uncomfortable positions and using both hands simultaneously for work. Work is performed from repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms to reach equipment in out of the way places. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Exposed to the hazards of the plumbing and pipefitting profession. Works in steam tunnels, in outdoor pits to repair leaks and at times in freezing temperatures and using the various tools of the plumbing trade. Subject to infection from unsanitary worksites, is exposed to burns from hot water and steam, and to strains and cuts.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/11/2024. Your background must demonstrate experience in performing at a journeyman level including installation, maintenance, repair and modification of steam, water, gas, piped oxygen, nitrous oxide, air, vacuum, storm drainage, sanitary drainage, chilled water piping and related equipment, refrigeration piping and related equipment, as well as the fixtures, devices, and appliances served by these utility systems. Maintaining water softeners, fire hydrants, oxygen, vacuum, air, and nitrous oxide systems; also storm drains, sanitary drains, and equipment such as sinks, bathtubs, water closets, urinals, drinking fountains, garbage disposals, dishwashing machines, water heaters, pumps, lavatories, stoves, dental equipment, acid eyewash dump showers, plastic piping, etc. Experience should include a broad knowledge of piping and related appurtenances which range from steam, vacuum, sprinkler, and insulating to plumbing systems with the ability to plan and lay out complete plumbing projects and the ability to interpret and apply blueprints. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.
