Duties
As a Research Health Scientist, you will:
Design, initiate, and conduct health scientific/public health research studies, surveys and investigations of various emerging public health issues and problems as it relates to occupational safety and health.
Utilize knowledge in statistical and allied health science principles and research methods to address important scientific questions surrounding the research area assigned.
Provide scientific advice and technical assistance to researchers within various public, private and/or nonprofit health and/or health-related agencies and organizations.
Assist in the writing of comprehensive statistical and analytic reports from studies or continuing projects that require the use of demographic and/or public health analytic techniques and evaluation, and application of the latest technology.

Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employee in the executive branch, you MUST disclose that to the Human Resources Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service. Current or Former Political Appointees: Submit SF-50.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting scientific research to evaluate public health issues related to occupational safety and health among emergency services workers; implementing and testing data collection instruments; developing plans for data analysis; and applying appropriate statistical methods to the analysis of the occupational worker injury and illness data.
OR have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of study directly related to the work of this position from an accredited College or University
OR have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
