Duties
As a Supervisory Research Health Scientist, you will:
Serve as a recognized expert for the agency with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, appraising programs, and initiating requirements for health scientific occupational safety and health studies
Serve as a first-line research supervisor responsible for providing scientific leadership during the planning, directing and execution of the activities and services of a team involved in studying and analyzing the patterns, causes and effects of health and disease conditions, which result in the development of methods to advance the understanding of the effects of public health issues and problems on occupational safety and health
Design, plan and initiate health scientific studies, surveys, and investigations
Initiate and maintain contacts with epidemiologists, health scientists, engineers, physicians, statisticians and other research personnel in government agencies, academic institutions, and industry, who are involved in common areas of research
Author or coauthor manuscripts or technical reports reflecting the results of the research and arrange for publication of such documents after approval by appropriate reviewing officials
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: leading, designing and conducting research studies related to occupational health surveillance, data science and visualization methods, structure and unstructured datasets, intervention studies with workers and organizations in the mining industry or other comparable industries; and developing recommendation to address anticipated and/or identified health and safety concerns.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employee in the executive branch, you MUST disclose that to the Human Resources Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service. Current or Former Political Appointees: Submit SF-50.
