The primary purpose of this position is: perform journeyman level duties in repairing and replacing automotive body panels, fenders, and straightening frames and in preparing, spray painting, and finishing surfaces of vehicles, both interior and exterior, to provide a high quality luster finish.

Duties

Inspect damaged automotive body, fenders, frames, and make repairs or replaces panels and fenders. Prepares metal and wood surfaces for painting by removing paint and loose particles with scrapers, compressed air, solvents, and sanding materials or equipment. Removes and installs body sections and aligns frames; adjusts and aligns hinges, locks and mating of surfaces. Mixes paint, primer, or surface pretreatment materials in accordance with manufacturer's specifications or Air Force directives, blending paint to match a desired shade as necessary. May instruct lower grade painters in painting and sanding techniques.

  • Highly desired to meet all Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs), have vocational or technical training certifications in automotive body repair
  • Must receive training on the handling and disposition of hazardous waste
  • Employee may be required to train and/or provide guidance to lower grade personnel
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 Metal Work Family, MOBILE EQUIPMENT METAL MECHANIC, 3809 series. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures and policies to include environmental directives pertaining to handling paint and sanding materials. 2. Knowledge of vehicle structures and familiarization with the characteristics of the metals, plastics and compounds used in vehicle construction to apply the correct repair techniques, tools and materials. 3. Knowledge to determine whether damages are economically repairable to a safe condition or uneconomical due to serious damage of critical structural components. 4. Skill to use the full range of repair techniques to replace, dismantle, re-assemble and realign the parts using the appropriate tools if necessary. 5. Skill to repair dents and scratches using hand tools, grinders and sanders, and repair materials. 6. Ability to lift and transport items more than twenty pounds using human motor functions. Physical Effort The employee works in tiring, awkward, or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. Work is performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles. Frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, and crouching is required. Frequent lifting, handling, and carrying of parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds is required. Similar effort is exerted in pushing, pulling, and positioning heavy parts, assemblies, and equipment. Climbs in and around vehicles and in and out of painting pit. Sometimes works in cramped spaces. Working Conditions Works indoors and outdoors on concrete surfaces and is exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise. When working outside, the employee is exposed to inclement weather conditions. The worker is constantly exposed to irritations and discomfort from dirt, dust, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use. Exposed to toxic fumes and skin irritations. May wear respirator when spraying. Exposed to dust and paint particles when sanding. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
