Duties
Identifies the need for range improvements. Check active projects for conformance and ensures no improvements are constructed without authorization.
Identifies and recommends improvement projects to include location and methods to be used. Summarizes and evaluates data.
Provide technical support and assistance in performing natural resource programs in rangeland environments.
Based on guidance and direction from the Rangeland Management Specialist (RMS) assists in planning and conducting range use and allotment inspections.
Coordinate pre-inventory mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Initiates and conducts range inventory surveys using accepted standards and techniques. Reviews data for technical accuracy.
Coordinates with rangeland management specialists and wildlife biologists when performing range inventories in support of natural resource management programs.
Work with interior and exterior customers such as the general public, permittees, private landowners, and State or local government representatives to provide information, receive and clarify instructions and to report work results as needed.

Qualifications

At the GS-05 Level: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04) in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include conducting preliminary inspections of range areas to select possible sites for re-seeding; assist in vegetation data collection for soil and range inventories; identifying the need for range improvement projects and inspecting the condition or inventory of current projects; develop conservation plans under the direction of higher level technicians; experience using maps, compasses, and GPS to record and determine locations; range or forest fire control, prevention or suppression work OR successfully completed a four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR a combination of education and experience described above.
At the GS-06 Level: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include conducting range research activities such as reviewing grazing permits and leases to ensure they are in compliance; monitor grazing allotments for trespass use; work in the operation of a livestock ranch or assist in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; gathers data to prepares and submit statistical and narrative reports for range monitoring activities; make recommendations based on observations on the intensity of range supervision needed; inventorying, identifying, recording, compiling, and reporting vegetation data such as the distribution, height, and survival, location of weeds, or unauthorized land use OR successfully completed six months of graduate level education directly related to the work of a Range Technician such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directed related to the position; OR a combination of experience and education described above.
At the GS-07 Level: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include performing work in the conservation, regulation, and use of Federally controlled lands for livestock grazing; providing, fostering and maintaining relationships with agencies, organizations, and private land owners; collect, compile and analyze rangeland monitoring and vegetation data; conducting livestock checks such as documenting compliance, livestock numbers and brands and the maintenance of range developments; and utilize GIS and GPS technologies for field data collection and transfer of accurate information to automated systems and databases; OR successfully completed one year of graduate level education directly related to the work of a Range Technician such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directed related to the position; OR a combination of experience and education described above.
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate/graduate education. Undergraduate/graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
Education
This position falls under the Range Technician Series, 0455. There are Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for this job series.
This position allows for education to be substituted for specialized experience (see qualification section for education requirements). If using education to qualify - You MUST submit a copy of ALL your college transcripts or a list of ALL college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university. Upon selection, official transcripts must be received prior to appointment. If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
