This position is in the Maintenance & Operation Section of the Facility Management Service at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, New York. This position compliments the Electrical Shop Supervisor and serves as a lead over several employees performing as Electricians and Telecommunication Workers.
Duties
Lead Duties and Responsibilities include:
Work leader improves efficiency by passing on to other Electricians, instructions received from the Electrical Shop Supervisor.
Leads the repairs and maintenance of the campus electrical building operations including lighting, generating systems, mechanical, hydraulic, and automated control systems which includes the use of subordinate worker, equipment, facilities, and materials on a week-to-week and/or month-to-month basis.
The incumbent, through supervisor guidance, serves to ensure deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, including planning work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies.
Coordinates with the supervisor the number of workers needed to accomplish specific projects assigned; redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work; informs higher level supervisors of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimates labor and other resources; and participates with the Electrical supervisor in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs; and estimates and recommendations as to scheduling projected work.
Spot checks work in progress to ensure chain of supervision's intent is being met and conforms to regulatory compliance. Reports progress and issues to the supervisor as well as the need for resources to overcome obstacles.
Performs as an Electrician if the need arises and to ensure completion of projects and work orders in timely fashion.
Performs as Electrician during emergencies to continue facility operations.
Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls that support industrial operations, computer complexes, or similar complex electrical loads.
Traces hard to locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.

Physical Requirements: The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places. The employees handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Working conditions include working at heights and over head, and exposure to inclement weather and high voltage electricity. These positions are typically exposed to any number of elements with one continuously present to the extent of being objectionable. Positions require the ability to be avaible twenty-four hours a day for emergency response.
