Duties
As a Biologist you will:
The incumbent for this position performs biological science work or support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents. Performs various techniques to rapidly identify and characterize biological and/or other agents that cause a number of diseases. Plans the sequence, direction, and progress of work. Modifies standard study methods and requirements, practices, or techniques or existing guide to address current and evolving problems or issues.
Acquires and organizes materials and information to carry out study procedures for assigned projects, upgrading current capabilities where appropriate. Experiments involve investigating, analyzing, and evaluating problems and situations involving a wide variety of circumstances or unusual conditions for activities carried out in the scientific area. The scientist has responsibility for ensuring that assigned phases or segments of the work. Using standard technology, makes adaptations to procedures and accepted practices when necessary. Handles unexpected conditions.
Prepares and delivers written and oral reports to a variety of individuals and groups in both informal and formal settings. Responds to questions for inclusion in a comprehensive report on study findings. Prepares a wide variety of charts, graphs, manuscripts, spreadsheets, etc. to report on study results and note any inconsistencies or area where the data appears inconclusive. Records study results in accordance with established procedures and maintains complete, detailed records of all experiments performed.

Basic Qualifications:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
or
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: supporting biological work, carrying out a variety of laboratory procedures and processes, identifying microbiological agents, collecting data and preparing reports on investigations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to
