The primary purpose of this position, AIRCRAFT PNEUDRAULIC SYSTEMS WORKER, WG-8268-08 Target 11, is to install, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain standard and specialty modified aircraft fuel systems, hydrazine systems, subsystems, in-flight refueling booms, external tanks, weapons pylons, tanks/cells and components on test aircraft.

Duties

Work on standard and modified heavy, fighter, commercial type aircraft fuel systems, hydrazine systems, fuel quantity indicating systems, structural hardware and assemblies. Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain special fuel systems. Perform duties as production inspector, certifies fuel system maintenance on appropriate aircraft forms and documentation. Perform in shop maintenance consisting of repair and functional testing of standard and nonstandard fuel system components including fuel cells and tanks. Maintain and operate all assigned shop test and support equipment, such as manometers, life support respirator units, portable air conditioners, air compressors, blower, heaters, sealant mixers, sealant guns, combustible gas indicator, dye injectors, tank certifiers, JFR testers, and air movers.

  • Required to possess a valid operator's license to drive a motor vehicle to and from work sites.
  • Required to wear ear protectors to eliminate engine noise, protective respirators, and equipment due to exposure to toxic fumes from fuel, hydrazine, sealant, and cleaning solvents.
  • Must wear steel toe safety shoes.
  • Required to physically qualify for work in fuel cells and to pass annual physical exams.
  • May be required to maintain a Government Travel Card.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. TARGETED POSITION: This position is a developmental (WG-08 Target WG-11) position. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selected may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (WG-08). Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. Military Spouse candidates exercising their preference will be placed at the full performance level, if considered to be best qualified and selected. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8200 Fluid Systems Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instrument Ability to Interpret Instruction, specification, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Troubleshooting PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involves active physical effort, standing for long periods of time, lifting, working in cramped and awkward positions, climbing in and out of aircraft and up and down work stands. Frequent lifting of objects up to 40 pounds may be required. Physically capable of entering and exiting a l0xl 6 oval shaped fuel cell access opening to accomplish integral fuel cell/tank maintenance. Hydrazine response duties require long periods of kneeling/standing and working in close proximity to moving F-16 aircraft, the physical ability to don and wear protective suits, backpacks, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) breathing air bottles. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Subject to rotating shifts, scheduled/unscheduled overtime and standby. Subject to deploy TDY to repair disabled aircraft. Works both inside and outside, subject to varied weather conditions. Subject to moderate/severe noise and vibration from shop tools, machinery, aircraft engines, operating equipment, and other power units. Subject to injury from operating powered equipment, cuts from metal and falls from work stands. There may be discomfort when wearing protective clothing, safety shoes, gloves, respirators or eye goggles and other equipment as required. Subject to working with hazardous materials, following proper use, handling, and storage guidelines. Exposed to aircraft fuels and other volatile substances. Enters/works in fuel cells and other parts of aircraft internal structure. Danger of injury while performing hydrazine maintenance on aircraft, testing systems under extreme hydraulic and pneumatic pressures, working on complex openings, moving systems component, and entering fuel tanks and cells for maintenance. Subject to risk of falling from aircraft or work stands.
