The position is located in the Loma Linda, Veteran Affairs Health Care System, Facility Management Service, in the Maintenance and Operations Section, Loma Linda, CA.

Duties

The Journeyman carpenter will be involved in the construction, alteration, repair or modification of items and structures such as metal framework, drywall, T-bar ceilings, doors, windows and fine furniture. The carpenter will be involved in the installation of prefabricated articles such as cabinets and bookcases. Erects metal framework by placing runners and studs in proper position and joining and fastening using screws and bolts. Alters building by installing or removing partitions. Alters building by installing drop ceiling (Coordination required with other trades to move non-carpentry items by supervisor). Is required to repair cabinetwork by replacing parts or sections with properly matched parts. Constructs facilities such as shelves, bins, and pallets for storage of supplies or equipment. Constructs containers such as crates, boxes or cases for use in storage or shipment of materials. Maintains woodworking tools repairs and adjusts turning belts and oils bearings of woodworking machinery. Sharpens edges of cutting tools. Installs items of building hardware such as hinges, hasps, and locks. The incumbent may be called upon to perform scheduled testing, repair, replace parts or assemblies and lubricate as needed items such as fire and smoke door hardware and closures. The carpenter must have the knowledge to use shop mathematics and work with fractions, to plan and measure materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in specifications. Perform other duties as required. He/she performs other related duties and tasks, which may be assigned in the support of this unit. He/she must have the skills and knowledge to use or operate, adjust and maintain hand or power equipment under safe conditions. The carpenter must have the knowledge to distinguish the difference between materials, such as ½" plywood from ¾" plywood, ½" drywall from 5/8" drywall, also must have adequate knowledge of fastening devices such as nails, screws, and drywall fasteners. The Foreman of the Structural Unit or Facility Improvement Team assigns work orally or through work orders. The carpenter selects tools, decides on the methods and techniques to be used to carry out assignments which are spot-checked during their progress. He/she selects the materials, which are described in the specifications, or obtains permission to substitute if standard materials are not available. The carpenter will be able to do material take-offs for assignments, develop bill of materials, interrupt architectural drawings, utilize Microsoft software, particular Excel and Word, and interrupt life Safety and trades standards/compliance in the execution of work. Physical Requirements: The carpenter works at benches or on job sites while materials are on supports. This requires considerable standing, stooping and or bending. He/she also works on ladders and scaffolds, which require working overhead or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable, when on job site repairs are to be made using hand operated tools. The carpenter occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh up to 90 pounds. Working Conditions: The carpenter will work inside a shop where the worker is subject to cuts for hand or powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Shop work is also unpleasant due to the presence of sawdust in the air. Frequently the carpenter may work outside in all kinds of weather. Occasionally he/she required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
