The Office of Management (OM), Health and Safety Branch (HSB), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Microbiologist to join our team! The ideal candidate will provide primary services to our organization's research community on biological safety and health issues. Additionally, they will play a key role in assisting research and support staff to identify and correct biological safety deficiencies.

Duties

Schedule and conduct surveys of research laboratories, animal care facilities, and other work areas to identify and document potential biosafety and health problems and hazards. Prepare reports of findings and develop specific guidance for actions necessary to correct deficiencies and improve the safety of the work environment. Review accident reports, conduct investigations and interviews, examine physical evidence, analyze data, and prepare reports of findings and conclusions. Provide advice and assistance to managers, program staff, scientists, and technical staff on a variety of biological safety and health matters. Instruct management officials, program and technical staff, and scientists on a variety of biological safety and health programs and subjects. Participate in the development and implementation of training programs designed to increase awareness of biological safety hazards, enhance the understanding of preventative measures, and promote safe and healthful practices. Conduct inspections, collect data, and provide reports on all matters pertaining to biological safety.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Microbiologist, GS-0403, position, you must have: A. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in microbiology; OR B. completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in biology, chemistry, or basic medical science. At least 20 semester hours need to be in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and at least 20 semester hours need to be in the physical and mathematical sciences (combination of course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent); OR C. a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in microbiology, or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in B above, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. In addition, to qualify for a Microbiologist position at the GS-0403-11 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and developing microbiological or biological experiments and protocols; evaluating the progress of microbiological experiments and establishing plans and resources for the completion of the project; preparing data in final form for scientific publication; coordinating the installation, repair, calibration and training for laboratory equipment.
