This position is located in the Maintenance Division at Petersburg National Battlefield in Petersburg, Virginia.

Duties

Assists higher graded workers with simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds and structures requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with more than one of the following occupations: carpentry, masonry, painting, roofing and motor vehicle operation. Identify hazards, reporting on-the-job injuries and safety violations in accordance with regulations, and periodically inspecting work places. Assists masons and higher graded workers with the stabilization, maintenance, and repair of prehistoric and historic masonry structures, ruins and sites. Carries out the maintenance and rehabilitation of the park cultural landscape through vegetation management. Removing deteriorated roofing materials in preparation for reroofing and assisting with restoring and stabilizing roofs. Petersburg National Battlefield protects the sites around the siege of Petersburg, VA during the American Civil War. The Park is split into 4 main units that are spread out over two cities and one other county. The park's headquarters and main visitor center are located in the Eastern Front Unit just outside of Petersburg, VA and there are visitor contact stations and facilities at the Five Forks and City Point units in Dinwiddie County and Hopewell respectively. This position will work as part of a Historic Preservation Team to accomplish projects centered around repairing and maintaining the parks historic assets. Work will include combining traditional methods and materials with modern techniques to preserve the features and overall character of historic structures. Patience and a lot of attention to detail are critical for the success of this work. Most projects will center around structures and work relevant to the time of Siege of Petersburg in 1864. Trade skills in traditional carpentry and masonry, along with painting, roofing, and grounds maintenance will comprise the bulk of the work for these projects.
