Duties

As a STUDENT TRAINEE (SOCIAL SCIENCE) at the GS-0199-5/7 some of your typical work assignments may include: Learn to identify critical factors in DoD research data sets, such as data limitations, sampling errors, and inconsistencies, developing their understanding of a wide range of quantitative and/or qualitative methods of data analysis for the assessment of the quality and effectiveness of complex programs, processes, plans, and/or systems. Participates in formal and on the job training to further develop knowledge of research methods and policies applicable to assigned programs or systems, as well as knowledge of agency program objectives, the sequence and timing of key program milestones, methods of evaluating program accomplishments, and assist in reviewing official demographic and geographic data for trends, internal consistency, and relationship to project activities. Assist in conducting basic analysis or research to analyze and review official demographic and geographic trends and identify changes in population distribution patterns; assists in developing ways of portraying the changes in reports, maps, and charts on paper and electronically. Assists with studies involving statistical theories, principles, concepts, methods, techniques, and practices; analytic techniques of statistics, personnel psychology, sociology, or specialized areas within the respective discipline to participate in projects measuring human characteristics and/or perform studies, analyses, and program evaluations of DoD personnel management practices and policies Coordinates with a diverse workforce to plan, organize, and conduct research projects involving the compilation, evaluation, and interpretation of geographical and statistical information on regions, metropolitan areas, and locales. Participates in drafting professional written and concise issue papers and talking points for senior analysts.

  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student (proof of enrollment is required with your application package).
  • Remain in good academic standing in accordance with Participant Agreement. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
  • Transcript must state major, earned credit hours, and cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0, and must include school and student identification on them or they will NOT be considered.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements: Current students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Students must be taking at least half-time course load, as defined by your school and remain in good academic standing in accordance with the Pathways Participant Agreement. Students must be enrolled with at least 6 semester hours or 9 credit hours, with a GPA of at least 2.0. You may qualify at the GS-05 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications: Successful completion of 4 academic years of post- high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in behavioral or social science or a related discipline. You may qualify at the GS-07 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications: Successful completed 1 full year of graduate level education in behavioral or social science or a related discipline OR Meets the requirements Superior Academic Achievement: Applicant is in the upper third of the graduating class; Has a 3.0 or higher out of 4.0 GPA based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses during the final 2 years OR 3.5 or higher GPA based on the average of the required courses in the major field of study during the final 2 years of curriculum) and completion of bachelor's degree in behavioral or social science or a related discipline. AND You may qualify at the GS-GS-05 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service: Knowledge of survey data analysis including survey packages (e.g., R); Assisting in preparing written comprehensive professional reports; Applying statistical principles in research and studies. You may qualify at the GS-GS-07 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service: Knowledge of survey data analysis including survey packages (e.g., R); Preparing written comprehensive professional reports; Applying statistical principles in research and studies Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for these grade levels.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION may be qualifying if a private organization specializing in interpreting foreign education programs has deemed the foreign education equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program or a U.S. accredited college or university has given full credit for the foreign courses.

Unofficial transcripts from U.S. Department of Education accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions listing your name, the name of the school, the date and degree awarded, and the list of classes and credits earned are acceptable for the application process. If selected, official transcripts are required before a firm job offer is made. A photocopy of your degree/diploma is not acceptable.

When relying on foreign education, submit transcripts and a copy of the equivalency evaluation results letter with a course-by-course listing.
