About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection & Prevention Division, Fort Campbell, KY. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Secondary firefighter position.

Duties

Serve as the initial incident commander in hazardous materials incidents when incumbent is the first arriving officer. Responsible for establishing an initial incident command location and directing all communications from the incident scene. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets immediate priorities, prepares schedules for completion of work, and evaluates performance of subordinates to ensure timely completion of tasks. Perform pre-incident planning activities and conduct company-level fire inspections and risk mitigation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a Pre-employment physical.
  • This position requires heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain a current valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
  • This position requires irregular tours of duty to include: on call, rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires a Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification.
  • The incumbent is responsible for assisting in emergency action involving hazardous waste.
  • The incumbent will successfully complete certification and on-the-job training covering hazardous waste technician work.
  • During rescue operations, the incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • The incumbent must remain clean-shaven to ensure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain certification as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician.
  • This position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position is subject to a one year probation to assess your ability to perform Supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • The position requires the following International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board certifications: Firefighter I and II and Airport Firefighter.
  • Certification's Required: Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Hazardous Materials Technician, and Hazardous Materials Incident Commander.
  • Certification's Required: Apparatus Driver/Operator for Pumper, ARFF, Water Tanker, and Aerial, Fire Officer I and II, Fire Service Instructor I, and Fire Inspector I, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander.
  • This position is covered as a rigorous/primary position.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-08 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37. Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Waivers to Maximum Entry Age MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
