About the Position: Serves as an Assistant Engineer on a USACE Tug Class I, that is USCG Subchapter M inspected, for the US Army Corps of Engineer, Detroit District, Operations Branch. Operate, maintain, repair a wide range of equipment and machinery and vessels engine room.

Duties

Operates vessel's diesel, electric, mechanical, hydraulic and electronic engines, equipment and machinery. Ensures equipment is kept properly lubricated and clean. Checks to see that equipment operates without overheating to avoid undue damage and time delays. Inspects and tests air and fuel tanks, gauges and safety valves. Furnishes information as to the status of work to the Chief Engineer and Master on a routine basis. Assists in all other work assigned by the Master as needed such tending lines, cleaning, and painting. Handles and fastens mooring and towing lines during making and breaking tow, docking, mooring and departure operations. Operates and maintains heavy construction equipment such as forklifts, bulldozers, road graders, snowplow equipment, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, road rollers, and skid steers in support of District needs.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R "Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program".
• This position requires a pre-employment physical exam AND annual physical due to the physical requirement of the position.
• This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 75% of duty time.
• Shift work is required during open-water (lake) towing operations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state issued motor vehicle driver's license.
• This position requires incumbent to wear safety equipment and/or use personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.
• This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.
• XH-09 Level: U.S. Coast Guard Qualified Member of Engine Department (QMED). Must Obtain credential within 12 months. To go to next grade XH10, must obtain (DDE) 1000hp within 2 Years. (attach copy)
• XH-10 Level: Must hold a DDE 1000 HP credential and obtain the DDE 4000/Unlimited credential within 3 years from entering the position. (attach copy)

Experience as a ASSISTANT ENGINEER, TUG CLASS I on a diesel powered seagoing tugboat over 65ft long with a 2000 horsepower main engine or more, along with other smaller diesel engines serving in other capacities. Responsible for planning work in accordance with standard procedures, directives, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations and marine requirements. Responsible for performing checks and inspections of seagoing tugs main engine and various other mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems onboard while in operation. Ensures preventative maintenance is performed on or ahead of schedule to ensure the tug is in a ready to sail, safe, clean, and in orderly condition, during the navigation season. Performs repairs to the tugs various machinery, equipment, engine rooms and all floating plant vessels. Periodically required to assist in troubleshooting problems and making repairs aboard survey vessels and the various vessels that make up the entire floating plant operations to include a tugboats, derrick boats, barges, and launches. XH-10 Level: I have the ability to perform common tasks associated with operations on vessels with less than 2,000 horsepower. I have operated some main engine or auxiliary equipment. I have inspected and performed maintenance tasks on various other mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems onboard while in operation. XH-09 Level: I have the ability to perform common tasks associated with operations and maintenance tasks. I have inspected simple electrical or mechanical equipment reference to systems on a vessel. Moderate physical effort is exerted in accomplishing tasks. Incumbent is subject to physical strain from swaying motions and jarring movements. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS: The majority of duties are performed in engine room aboard floating plant. The engine room, where the incumbent works is usually noisy, hot, and may be exposed to fumes from the oil and lubricants used; danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, danger from attending moving machinery and electrical shock. Space is usually limited and when making repairs and adjustments to engines and machinery may be forced to work in cramped positions. Work may be performed inside and outside subjecting employee to varying climatic conditions such as rain and or snow, temperature extremes both hot and cold, risk of falling overboard, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, possible drowning, and crankcase explosion. PPE is always utilized while working.
