The Department of Commerce ranked top 5 in the 2023 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government amongst large agencies for the 12th year in a row! The ranking showcases the Department's continued commitment to increasing our employee engagement, employee satisfaction, and positive perceptions towards diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
The mission of the Applied Physics Division is to advance measurement science and technology in areas of critical importance to national priority needs, such as, advanced manufacturing, national security, quantum communications, strategic computing, and quantitative imaging!
As the new Physical Scientist on our team, you will research and develop novel metrology for nanostructure and device-level measurement of thermal transport on industry-relevant materials as part of a CHIPS project. Key responsibilities include:
Execution of thermal transport measurements on a range of nanostructures of increasing structural and material complexity.
Development of data analysis methods to extract the relevant time constants and material parameters with appropriate uncertainty analysis.
Design of optical ultra-fast EUV instrument and experiment.
Work closely with collaborators to correlate these measurements with device performance, and aid in the development of models that capture the underlying physics and mechanisms that drive thermal transport.
Present research results and submit for publication.
Mentor students and post-doctoral researchers towards measurement and system deliverable goals.

Qualifications
Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as:
Experience with optical ultra-fast pump-probe measurements.
Experience with high harmonic generation EUV sources.
Experience with EUV/soft-x-ray imaging including coherent diffractive imaging.
AND experience with the measurement and interpretation of ultra-fast nanoscale thermal transport.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
