About the Position: This is a Medical Technician position located in Fort Jackson South Carolina. You will use judgment and initiative to plan and carry out work assignments in accordance with established protocols, previous training, or accepted laboratory practices. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Sets up equipment, instruments and apparatus. Calibrates various analyzers as required and runs quality control samples on all instruments, making adjustments as necessary and performing operator maintenance. Manages patient results status by verifying and certifying results input into laboratory computer system. Assumes responsibility to review results and to repeat unusual results as necessary. Performs laboratory testing in each of the following sections of the Laboratory: Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology etc. Performs phlebotomy on individuals as directed by laboratory management staff. Conducts necessary quality control procedures. Maintains accurate records utilizing Quality Control charts/worksheets and ensures all QC results fall within established control limits prior to releasing patient results. Independently performs moderately difficult and complex laboratory examinations and procedures. Selects appropriate procedures for request and/or study.

  • This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement.
  • Tier 1: Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • May be required to work weekend call duties and evenings.
  • Pre-appointment physical is required.
  • Child Care Background is required for this position in accordance with DODI 1402.5
  • Temporary Duty travel (TDY) may be required up to 5%
  • Medical Laboratory Technician certification via ASCP or AMT may be required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a clinical laboratory performing a full range of procedures such as specimen processing, chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, immunohematology and/or microbiological testing and calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as medical lab science, chemistry, biology or other medical or science related degrees. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. AND Licensure: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
