Duties

As an Industrial Hygienist you will: Serve as a technical expert for the agency, with responsibility for conducting comprehensive industrial hygiene surveys and special studies , as well as for providing expert advice to agency installations nationwide. Provide expertise and advice to agency area office directors and industrial hygienists within the region, as well as to managers, other employees, State officials, employee organizations and other Federal agencies. Conduct comprehensive industrial hygiene surveys and special studies. Responsible for highly complex and sensitive inspections. Provide industrial hygiene expertise in the development of criteria for recommended national occupational health and safety standards for specific hazards. Responsible for conversion of research data and technical information into criteria for health and safety standards.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. or Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. or Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: planning and conducting inspections to identify and evaluate a wide variety of health and safety hazards such as chemical, biologic, physical, and/or ergonomic health hazards to analyze the findings and recommend corrective measures and controls. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
