Located in the Department of Marine Engineering, Office of the Academic Dean and Provost, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Maritime Administration (MARAD), this position was established to provide instructions to Midshipmen in the Engineering Laboratories and the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of instructional equipment in the various Engineering laboratories used for the Engineering Education Program.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09 it must include: Experience in the use and applications of various types of hand tools and power tools, fabrication tools, measuring tools, and similar tools. Experience in the installation, operation, maintenance, and/or repair of mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, piping, steam and/or gas turbines, diesel engines, heat exchangers, control systems, or equivalent equipment typically in an industrial environment. Highly Desirable Experience: Experience instructing in an Academic Engineering environment. Experience in operating and/or instructing the use of the various welding processes. Experience in the operation and/or instructing the use of lathes and mills. Experience working underway in a marine environment. Ability to review and comprehend schematics, diagrams, detailed drawings, sketches, manuals, or the equivalent. Please note that this specialized experience requirement can be met by qualifying experience at the second lower grade level (GS-9), since no intervening GS-10 level positions exist in the normal line of progression for this occupation in this organization/location. You cannot qualify based on education at the GS-11 grade level, you must have experience. Industrial Equipment Operation- Knowledge of principles and methods for operating industrial equipment. Mechanics- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, benefits, repair, operation, and maintenance. Metal Processing and Metalworking - Knowledge of materials, methods, and appropriate tools to process, treat, form, or shape metal. Education

Individual Occupational Requirements for series 0802 (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): This series covers technical positions supervising, leading, or performing work involving applying a practical knowledge of the methods and techniques of engineering or architecture; and construction, application, properties, operations, and limitations of engineering systems, processes, structures, machinery, devices, and materials.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:

• Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
• Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
