The primary purpose of this position is: This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of 9W183 (Machinist, WG 3414-10). Incumbent works closely with the supervisor in performing duties identified in the full performance standard core personnel document/core document.
Duties
- Manufactures, repairs, and rebuilds parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys through the use of conventional and/or computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools and precision handwork.
- Sets up and operates a variety of conventional and/or computer numerical control (CNC) machines such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain, and universal milling machines; shapers; planers; internal and external grinders; thread cutters; and radial drills.
- Uses a variety of precision instruments and equipment such as vernier calipers; height gauges; squares; protractors; inside, outside, and depth micrometers; surface gauges; vee blocks; parallel bars; gauge blocks; dial indicators; optical and mechanical comparators; and go and no-go thread, ring, bore, and plug gauges to attain dimensions and maintain tolerances.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
- Uses various auxiliary machine tool attachments such as rotary vices, dividing heads, magnetic chucks, taper attachments, and universal milling attachments to perform work on parts that present complex configurations and close tolerances between interrelated surfaces.

- Duties of this position meet all requirements as a category 4 designation and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively.
- This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and cannot become a member of the Ready Reserve. (IAW: DoDD 1200.7, "Screening the Ready Reserve,")
- This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission-Critical-Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
- This position requires a physical/medical examination.
- The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Frequently handles, lifts, and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with assistance.
- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license will be required for the position.
- Incumbent may be required to take part in mobility exercises and contingency operations.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG - 3400 - MACHINE TOOL WORK Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a MACHINIST without more than normal supervison.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of a variety of conventional or computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools such as lathes; vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain, and universal milling machines; shapers; planers; internal and external grinders; thread cutters; and radial drills
2. Knowledge of a variety of machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, angular drive heads, taper attachments, rotary tables, and others
3. Knowledge of various metals and other materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze, high carbon and alloy steels, chrome, nickel, titanium, nylon, rubber, plastics and teflons
4. Knowledge of trade mathematics including plane geometry, the use of trigonometric functions, and machinist handbook formulas. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures
5. Skill in setting up and operating a variety of machine tools, and skill in debugging programs developed by others. Skill in interpreting blueprints, program readouts, and technical directives, and in the use of shop mathematics
6. Skill in the use of many types of precision instruments and equipment such as vernier calipers; height gauges; squares; protractors; inside, outside and depth micrometers; surface gauges; vee blocks; parallel bars; gauge blocks; dial indicators; optical and mechanical comparators, and go and no-go thread, ring bore, and plug gauges
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Frequently handles, lifts, and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; and danger to fingers, hands, and other body parts from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
