Duties
Transports patients from hospital units to the operating room assuring safe transportation of the patient.
Checks rooms for cleanliness, runs electrical checks to see if suctioning, cauterizing and other equipment is operating properly.
Responsible for maintenance of aseptic procedures during preparation for, and assistance with, surgical procedures.
Assists in positioning and draping the patient for the specific procedure.
Hands instruments to the surgeon during the procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs.
Cleans operating room after surgery; remove and dispose of soiled and/or contaminated materials; change linens; wash instruments and assemble them for sterilization.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 25 pounds is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic requirements for a GS-05 Nursing Assistant:
Experience required: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: experience in preparing/transporting patients before and after surgery procedures; knowledge of surgery equipment/tools use during surgery procedures; recognizing symptoms of distress prior/after surgery procedures; responding to emergency situations; assisting surgical team during procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: Completion of at least a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in nursing or related field of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100% to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-04).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
