The incumbent serves as Chief of Internal Medicine with full responsibility for outpatient medical/clinical services for the facility. Chinle Service Unit serves more than 37,000 active users in the central portion of the Navajo Nation with outpatient and inpatient care services. The incumbent is a member of the medical staff and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services in his/her specialty.

Duties

Providing specialty specific inpatient and outpatient care as appropriate across the age spectrum. Responsible for the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients, and high acuity cases in the capacity of the staff physician. Exercises overall supervisory responsibility for the management and direction of their specialty in specific clinical services. Provides oversight of employee recruitment, orientation, performance appraisal, competency assessment. Works closely with local, service unit and area level leadership towards the effective provision of clinical preventive services and planned care. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Graduate Training Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-15 GS-15: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training within the specialty area of Internal Medicine. (e.g., a senior specialist with several years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGERIAL ABILITIES: Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training that they possess, or have the potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as listed under the appropriate category below: a. Ability to motivate, train and work effectively with subordinates who have a variety of background and training. b. Ability to accomplish the quality and quantity of work expected with set limits of cost and time. c. Ability to plan own work and carry out assignments effectively. d. Ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing, in working out solutions to problems or questions related to work. e. Ability to understand and further manage goals as these affect day-to-day work operations. f. Ability to develop improvements in or design new work methods and procedures. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification: Applicants applying in a specialty must meet one of the following as an approved agency-wide selective factor. This becomes part of the minimum requirements to qualify for the position. Board Certified in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying or Active Registrant of the Board in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
