Reclamation is seeking a career professional looking for an opportunity to capitalize on their expertise as a Geologist. You can make a difference in the West by assisting in meeting increasing water demands while protecting the environment. Duty Location: Sacramento, California This is not a virtual position.

Duties

The primary duties of this position are: Prepare and maintain project schedules and budgets. Conduct geologic drilling and sampling investigations and design data collection in support of design, construction, and long-term performance and safety of major civil structures such as dams, canals, powerplants, pipelines, and tunnels. Coordinate geological work in Reclamation organization units or outside agencies. Resolve controversy related to the technical work with Reclamation organizational units, outside agencies, or among team members. Furnish technical assistance to supporting geologists and physical science technicians and reviews their work for competence and accomplishment of assignments. Participate in inspections of work sites to ascertain conditions, identify problems related to assigned work, and establish workable solutions. Prepare task orders for work to be done under contract. Review designs and specifications related to regional programs or facilities which were prepared by consultants or other agencies Provide technical support, advice, and consultation to the regional office as well as project or construction offices regarding problems or questions related to geological conditions.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement: To be eligible for consideration, you must first meet the Basic Education Requirement for this position. A. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. or B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and/or specialized experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume. To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-9 level in federal service having demonstrated experience having independent responsibility for a defined study or phase of a study requiring planning and conducting routine geologic work; experience involving selecting and adapting procedures, handling unexpected conditions, following set guidelines, and recognizing factors that may affect findings, and a sound working knowledge of geology in performance of responsible scientific work. These examples are not all-inclusive. You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education having 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You may combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications. To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-11 level in federal service having demonstrated experience in the application of geology in the fields of engineering geology, construction geology, or hydrogeology associated with water resources and civil infrastructure projects; experience involving geological studies and investigations in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to resolve geological and hydrogeological problems related to (a) design and construction of engineered structures, (b) operation and maintenance of dams, canals, pipelines, tunnels, power plants and appurtenant works, (c) geologic evaluation of dam foundations and embankments, and (d) hydrogeologic studies (dewatering, safe yield studies, groundwater models). These examples are not all-inclusive Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Time-In-Grade: Current career or career-conditional employees of the Federal government, or former career or career-conditional employees, who have a break in service of less than one year, are required to meet the time-in-grade restriction of one year of Federal experience at the next lower-grade, with few exceptions outlined in 5 CFR 300.603(b). You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 07/05/2024.

Education

This position has a mandatory education requirement. You must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. Non-submission will result in being rated not-qualified for the position.

You will be required to provide official college transcripts to verify educational qualifications, if selected. An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic transcripts certified by notary publics are NOT official. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to reporting to work as a condition of employment. Failure to submit official transcripts may be grounds for dismissal or rescission of the job offer.

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
