Duties
Assist physicians in diagnosis breathing problems.
Evaluate patients and perform studies, perform breathing treatments, operating and maintaining mechanical ventilators and other respiratory equipment.
Provide emergency care such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, perform diagnostic tests (ABG’s), perform chest physiotherapy, educate patients on their illnesses, and anything else Respiratory related in our scope of practice.
Sets up, calibrates and troubleshoots pulmonary function and other respiratory diagnostic equipment in accordance with American Thoracic Society (ATS) standards.
Facilitates interpretation of testing by appropriate physicians
Monitors and evaluates patient respiratory treatments done by other clinicians to ensure respiratory interventions are rendered as prescribed.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be available for on-call duties one week per month based on mission requirements.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
- This position requires 12 hour shifts during a 24 hour day providing coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Some shifts may require an 8-hour shift.
- Incumbent must be certified in PALS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
- This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 15 - 44 pounds is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating respiratory therapy patients; setting up, operating, and/or maintaining respiratory therapy equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as respiratory therapy.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
