Duties
As a Genetic Counselor in the Genetics Branch (GB), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), you will:
Provide psychosocial support through genetic counseling to study participants and families.
Provide scientific expertise for genetic research programs.
Conduct research studies on heritability and psychosocial effects of genetic diseases.
Assist in clinical and translational research including; performing reviews of relevant medical/scientific literature, organizing data, and writing manuscripts for publication.
Evaluate potential impact of legislation, reports and other information for ongoing genetic counseling issues and recommend action.
Prepare reports and documentation on complex scientific or technical information.
Present information at conferences, meetings, and lectures on genetic counseling programs.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

- Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.

Qualifications
Education Requirement:
In order to qualify for a Genetic Counselor, GS-0440, position, you must have a bachelor's degree in genetics or one of the basic biological sciences that include at least 9 semester hours in genetics; or a graduate degree in a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics.
Additional Qualifications for GS-13 level:
In addition, in order to qualify for a Genetic Counselor at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing genetic counseling services to families and individuals participating in cancer research protocols; assisting in clinical and translational research on the psychosocial impact of genetic testing; coordinating genetic care activities related to clinical research functions; coordinating genetic counseling and clinical research with other scientific, technical, and program staff; and preparing reports and other documents on genetic counseling and research programs.
