About the Position: Serves as a Environmental Health Technician performing duties in support of the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and its geographic area of responsibility. This position is located with the Lyster Army Medical Center, Fort Novosel.

Duties
Conduct environmental health and sanitation surveys, identify potential health hazards, and make recommendations to correct deficiencies.
Operate a drinking water laboratory to conduct the water quality surveillance program.
Assist with sanitary inspections and surveys for food service facilities, family housing, barber and beauty shops, swimming pools, recreational facilities, medical treatment facilities, child care centers, and family child care homes.
Train various people in processes, procedures, and regulations relating to compliance in the areas of water quality, hazardous waste, regulated medical wastes, swimming pools, entomology, and sanitation.
Prepare letters of instruction, command informational letters, news articles, and other educational materials.
Develop lesson plans, training aids, and conducts classes on topics such as foodservice sanitation, child development center and family child care health and sanitation, field preventive medicine, and waste handling.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Child Care Checks: This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in identifying health hazards in one or more areas of environmental sanitation; performing analyses using industrial hygiene sampling methods; and gathering data on the issue and use of hazardous materials to support reporting requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Environmental Law.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
