This Recreation Specialist position is located at the Nevada Skies Youth Wellness Center in Wadsworth, NV. The primary responsibility of this position is to evaluate recreation needs and plan, organize, advise on, and administer recreation activities as part of the treatment program, as well as, introduce clients to various forms of recreation as alternatives to alcohol and drug use during leisure time. This position reports to the Milieu Coordinator onsite.
Duties
Plans. schedules and administers activities to enhance physical well being to involve a wide variety of activities such as wilderness adventures, sports, physical fitness, swimming, cultural activities, crafts, art, music, drama, reading, writing, public speaking, field trips, and American Indian traditional and spiritual activities.
Plans and coordinates the details of recurring activities and special events to make maximum use of staff, facilities, services, and other resources.
Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing activities noting responses of the participants, program objectives, resources, unforeseen developments, implementing program changes, and variations in activities.
Plans and leads adventure-based counseling and trust activities and assists accompanying staff in helping the clients process the experience.
Complete recreational assessments of each patient to analyze the existing recreational activities of the patient and to develop recreation plans to replace the substance abuse associated activities with gratifying and functional recreational activities.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Undergraduate and Graduate Education:Major study -- general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0188-07:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 Grade Level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples Include: Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations; OR
Completion of (1) year of graduate-level education , in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education; OR
Superior Academic Achievement - Completion of a Bachelor's degree in a field that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position with one of the following: (1) Class Standing- upper third of the graduating class. (2) Grade-Point Average- 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on official transcript, or based on courses completed during final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on average of required courses completed in major, or required courses in major completed during the final 2 years of curriculum. (3) Honor Society Membership- election to membership in a national scholastic honor society; OR
Possess a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-7 grade level.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
