Duties

The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The incumbent will be assigned to the Health Information Management (HIMS) Section at Harry S. Truman VA Medical Center. Duties may include but are not limited to: Scanning documents into CPRS. This position is responsible for carrying out a variety of health information functions. The incumbent performs duties related to the receipt, indexing, scanning, and destruction of health and administrative information. The incumbent will interface with personal computer (PC) applications as well as numerous VistA applications. The incumbent will index each scanned document into a SQL database via CPRS (Computerized Patient Record System) and GUI tools, then associate each scanned document with the correct patient's CPRS record, the appropriate TIU document, assign the appropriate document-named nomenclature, and electronically "sign on chart" scanned documents. At times, incumbent will review and research medical reports from non-VA health care facilities, determining scanning requirements. When records are received, the incumbent will ensure that all necessary health/administrative information is integrated into CPRS through the PC scanning software and hardware. The incumbent will index this information using PC/VistA Imaging application bridges. After the scanning and indexing process is complete, the incumbent will ensure quality control requirements are met for all documents scanned into CPRS. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/24/2024. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. ***Please include a copy of your class schedule and transcripts.*** You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below: General Experience: You must have 3 months of general experience. OR, Education: Completed High School or Equivalent OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Can involve bending, reaching, stretching, stooping, and pulling and pushing of records and/or carts. It involves use of step stool to reach records and may on occasion require lifting approximately 25 pounds. It can involve delivering records to various clinics and locations throughout the facility, which requires standing, walking or climbing stairs. Other work assignments are more sedentary with some walking, bending and carrying of files. Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in the medical record file room located in the basement. The file room is well lighted and ventilated. Concentration on a specific task can be made difficult due to frequent telephone and personal contacts. Much time and effort can be spent in effectively communicating with patients and/or their representatives in order to ascertain their needs, or to explain rules and regulations.
