This position is located within the Location Support Services, for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), in Stoneville, MS.
In this position, you will work under the general supervision of a Utility Systems Operator Supervisor to assist in the installation or modification of electrical and mechanical equipment in the research gins, shops, greenhouse, and laboratories.
Duties
Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions of wiring circuits and electrical controls.
Assists in rearranging or installing electrical hardware and lighting fixtures in new and existing systems.
Performs miscellaneous maintenance work, such as replacing starters and fluorescent tubes in lighting fixtures throughout the office and laboratory buildings.
Sorts and replaces electrical supplies and parts in storage compartments and maintains inventory of electrical supplies.
Installs electric timers, motor starters, humidifiers, humidistats and thermostats.
Interprets and applies National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties.
Troubleshoots malfunctioning electrical and mechanical equipment by identifying broken or disconnected electrical components.
Performs tasks involving use of electrical hand tools and power equipment such as power drills, conduit benders, and basic electrical test equipment such as voltmeter, ohmmeter and ammeter.
Requirements

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 06/27/2024. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort:
The physical requirements are lifting, pulling and pushing loads and climbing on ladders and scaffolding. Physical efforts involve moving loads frequently up to 50 pounds; and occasionally in excess of 75 pounds; setting up work and equipment and in completing assignments. Good hearing, eyesight, and body coordination are required to perform the assignments effectively.
Working Conditions:
Most work is performed inside of laboratory buildings, which are subject to noise, dirt, dust, drafts and standing for long periods. And outside work is subject to dust, heat, cold and rain or prevailing weather conditions. Must observe safety rules where applicable. Personal safety equipment such as steel-toed shoes/boots, safety glasses, face shields, hearing protectors and nuisance dust masks are required.
