About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California. Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs. Youth Facilities and child care available. Mass transportation is available at minimal cost. Surrounding area boasts a full range of outdoor sports/recreation activities.
Duties
Lead employees in performing mechanical repairs on both heavy mobile equipment and powered support equipment used in field combat support.
Performs the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic and Powered Support Systems Mechanic.
Performs inspections ranging from acceptance, in-process and final inspections to include identifying repairs.
Process all hazardous waste in accordance with prescribed procedures as established by the Depot Environmental Protection Division.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Temporary Duty Travel, TDY may be required up to 5% of the time.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires a valid, United State issued motor vehicle driver's license.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health/ ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Position may be converted to permanent without further competition.
- Temporary promotion may be made or extended up to a maximum of five years.
- Temporary reassignment may be made or extended at management discretion.
- Temporary appointment may be extended in one year increments up to a maximum of three years.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Position may be filled as a temporary promotion, reassignment, or Change to Lower grade NTE 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Temporary promotions, reassignments, or Change to Lower Grade may be extended up to a maximum of five years, and may be made permanent without further competition.

I have the ability to perform common Mobile & Powered System Equipment Mechanic Leader duties. I have led other employee in performing mechanical repairs on various types of equipment; checked work of other employee for compliance with policies; performed overhaul and repair work on ground tactical vehicles and heavy-duty mobile equipment. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: May be required to work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work frequently requires climbing on top of equipment or crawling under equipment to work on the various components. Incumbent will frequently have to bend, reach, stretch and crouch. Work is strenuous, often requiring the lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 45 pounds. Incumbent will also push, pull and turn heavy parts and equipment. Moves heavier items with assistance of other workers.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside. The incumbent is exposed to drafts, dirt, grease and vehicle fumes. Incumbent is exposed to some inclement weather such as rain, snow, cold and freezing temperatures; and may be required to work in muddy and wet or icy areas when outdoors. Subject to burns, scrapes, cuts, bruises, shocks and strain.
