Duties

As a Physician (Public Health) you will: Serve as senior medical advisor to the Division Director and the Science Officer and other senior leadership on both national and international public health medical program activities. Serve as a special projects officer and conduct comprehensive research, review and analyses on a wide variety of public health medical programs to provide a wide variety of complex staff papers that address complex multi-functional issues. Serve as a leading authority and integrate knowledge and experience of public health medical programs and policies to provide guidance on cross cutting procedural and multilayered and multifaceted policy issues to other components of the agency and other governmental agencies. Provide medical leadership and expertise in the development and execution of research projects, ensuring scientific soundness and technical feasibility. Participate in collaborative efforts within the agency/organization, other Federal, states, local agencies, private and non-private organizations, and academic institutions to determine the areas in which the Division can make the greatest contribution to improvements in the capacity of public health delivery and information systems. Perform non-clinical duties involving the evaluation of medical research or the identification of causes or sources of disease or disease outbreaks. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital, or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: For GP-15 -- 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GP-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: implementing Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations. providing guidance for compliance with the CLIA regulations in infectious disease laboratories diagnostic testing, validation of test methods used, and competency of staff approved for conducting tests to meet the quality standards for laboratory testing to identify disease. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
