Duties
Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief of the Operation Branch.
Plan and organize the work on a day-to-day basis to assure timely handling of priority cases.
Ensure maintenance of station facilities, equipment, and apparatus are performed to standards.
Review work schedules to meet changes in workload considering availability of employees.
Keep employees informed about management policies, procedures, and practices as they relate to the work of the unit.
Perform fire prevention tasks such as discussing fire hazards with responsible officials recommending or ordering removal of hazardous conditions and issuing fire permits and providing information regarding fire prevention.
Review construction/renovation designs to ensure fire protection features meet or exceed current fire codes and for planning purposes.
Investigate causes of fires and prepares fire reports.
Perform special inspections of fire stations and reserve centers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability.
- This position is required to successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires incumbent to participate in the department's wellness program to include a structured physical exercise program, annual physical examination, and annual physical agility test.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires incumbent to wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- This position requires incumbent to work a 72-hour weekly tour and may be required to work weekends and holidays.
- This position is subject to recall, an inclement weather position and is a mission essential position.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work .
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes directing fire crews engaged in providing fire prevention and protection services using knowledge of firefighting and fire prevention theories and techniques; providing training in fire protection and prevention; determining materials, equipment, and supplies necessary for a fire prevention operation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the below listed certifications (for their applicable grade) certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
GS-11: To qualify, the incumbent must possess the following IFSAC/PROBOARD certifications at time of application: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, 1st Responder certifications, and Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B), which must be issued by a State or National Registry. Within 12 months the incumbent must obtain: IV authorization. (Applicants must attach all certificate copies with application.)
