About the position: The work area is a hospital dining facility and kitchen which is operational from 5:00 A.M.- 7:00 P.M. hours daily, staffed by an early and a late shift of food service staff. Applicant will work in the kitchen doing meal production and service. The work is performed mostly in a kitchen operating under a production schedule assigned by a supervisor. Ability to follow instruction is necessary. Maintains courteous and respectful relationships in the workplace.

Duties

Prepare raw ingredients for meal service. Work under the direction of a cook supervisor who prescribes methods, procedures, priorities, and time requirements to be followed and met. Supervisor establishes daily work assignments, accompanied by oral and written instruction for recipes, menus, portions sizes, number of servings, etc. Coordinate and execute the cooking process as orders are received and according to work assigned. Evaluate each food product and takes appropriate action to ensure each patron receives a very high quality meal. Provide instruction to lower grade cooks in food preparation principles and techniques and on sanitation and safety practices.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in the kitchen area which is well lighted, but is often hot and noisy. The worker is exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been mopped or where food has been spilled. The worker is subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water.
