Duties

Serve as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) with responsibility for the radiation safety program to prevent potential radiation exposure when the potential for radiological hazard exists. Protects personnel within the facility from exposure to ionizing radiation and monitors operations during use of all radioactive calibration sources. Develop and implement radiation safety policies and procedures for all radiation sources to minimize exposures. Use measurement standards and artifacts to generate or realize a physical quantity, e.g., infrared radiation, with specified parameters, e.g., power and frequency. Certify radiation monitoring devices utilized by health and safety personnel.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) must successfully complete the U.S. Army Radiological Safety Course and be approved by the USATA Radiation Control Committee.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent which includes: experience developing and implementing radiation safety policies and procedures for all Support Center radiation sources to minimize exposures; designing radiation monitoring and sampling plans and utilizes air samplers and flow proportional counting equipment for measurement of alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray radiations; and instructing personnel in the operation of radiation sources and safe work practices, emergency procedures, harmful effects of radiation exposure, and related topics. OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Masters of Science. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
