Duties

As a Research Entomologist, you will: Serve as an expert authority and consultant on insecticide resistance in vectors projects having extensive impact on national and international arboviral vector research programs, where existing hypotheses, concepts, and techniques need to be significantly extended before substantial progress can be made. Research projects, studies or broad areas of concern that entail complicating and interacting factors, concepts, or conditions. Develop strategies to meet short and long-range goals for detection and prevention of insecticide resistance in vectors and assures that strategies reflect most promising directions in the research, preventive, and control approaches as it relates to vector-borne disease control. Plan, organize, and direct scientific efforts for research problems that are recognized as extensive obstacles to progress and that have been particularly unyielding to research analysis.

Requirements continued Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employee in the executive branch, you MUST disclose that to the Human Resources Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service. Current or Former Political Appointees: Submit SF-50. Basic Qualifications: Successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology Or Have a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: managing mosquito insecticide resistance programs, identification of research priorities, formulation and design of research projects, and management of internal and external collaborative projects. To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting and supporting the monitoring of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes and providing assistance to state, federal, and international public health agencies. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
