This position is located in the Washington Headquarters Service, Raven Rock Mountain Complex (RRMC). The organization provides fire protection, fire prevention, and emergency services and programs for Raven Rock and associated sites, both underground and above ground structures. The hazards, limitations, and special circumstances the installation poses require skills and knowledge not encountered in conventional fire department operations or other locations.
Duties
Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following:
Oversees the daily activities of firefighters during response to fire, emergency medical services, hazardous materials/Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE), technical rescue and other emergencies in accordance with established techniques and principles.
First line supervisor for GS-08 Lead Firefighters and GS-05/06/07 Firefighters, supervising personnel engaged in accomplishing, fire alarm monitoring and dispatching, fire protection, suppression and prevention duties and emergency call response.
Participates in committees, working groups, and task forces and teams to improve or support all the agency's missions.
Performs the duties of rating supervisor for Firefighters assigned to their platoon, being fully cognizant of Merit System Principles and EEO practices.

- This position may require up to 5% occasional travel away from your normal duty station for official business on military or commercial aircraft

- The incumbent must possess a valid U.S. State Driver's license. The incumbent must be able to obtain and a government driver’s license to operate government vehicles
- The incumbent must wear a uniform. The incumbent is required to wear protective equipment, i.e., arc flash rated suit, Tyvek suits and respirators, while working in hazardous areas

You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your experience:
Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade;
Performing rescue operations;
Administering detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards;
Operation of fire communications equipment;
Controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or
Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
In addition to the meeting the specialized experience notated above, to occupy this position, the incumbent must currently possess and maintain the following certification levels (You must upload your individual certifications or transcript at the time of your application):
Proboard, IFSAC, or DOD certifications in Firefighter I & II, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, HazMat Technician, HazMat Incident Commander, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply, Public Telecommunicator I & II, Fire Officer I & II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I
Certifications in Confined Space Rescue Awareness, Confined Space Operations and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course
This position requires you to currently possess and to maintain the following certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
This position requires you to currently possess Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
In addition to the meeting the specialized experience notated above, to occupy this position, the incumbent must obtain and maintain the following certification levels within the notated timeframe:
This position requires you to obtain and maintain PA Certification EMT or PA Paramedic, within one (1) year of entry.
Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain the following training certifications within 2 (two) years of entry: Proboard, IFSAC or DOD certifications in Airport Firefighter and Driver/Operator Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting.
MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE: Employees hired for the first time ("originally hired") into GS-0081 positions must not exceed the established Maximum Entry Age (MEA) at the time of appointment. The MEA for Firefighters (FFs) is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered FF position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37 unless a waiver from the Washington Headquarters Services is approved prior to appointment.
Firefighter Special Retirement Coverage (Secondary): FERS Position covered as secondary under the FERS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8401(14), 5 U.S.C. 8412(d), and 5 CFR 842.802]. Position covered as secondary under the CSRS special retirement provisions for Federal firefighters [5 U.S.C. 8331(21), 5 U.S.C. 8336(c), and 5 CFR 831.902].
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBERS: The VOW Act Chapter 21 of Title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.), Section 2108a, requires Federal agencies treat active duty service member as veterans, disabled veterans, and preference eligible, when they submit, at the time they apply for a Federal job, a "certification" of active service in lieu of a DD-214, assuming the service member is otherwise eligible. A "certification" letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. The service member's military service dates are necessary in order to determine whether he or she meets the definition of "veteran" under 5 U.S.C. 2108(1). The "certification" must reflect the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions not later than 120 days after the date of submission. The "certification" must be signed by, or by direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters and must indicate when your terminal leave will begin (if applicable), your rank, dates of active duty service, the type of discharge and character of service (i.e. honorable). Further, under paragraph (h) of the rule, agencies are required to verify a qualifying separation from military service prior to appointment, through the DD-214 or other appropriate documentation. Your preference and/or appointment eligibility will be verified prior to appointment. Active duty members that fail to provide a valid "certification" of service with their initial application will be found "not eligible." Military members may be appointed before the effective date of their military retirement/separation if member is on terminal leave.
