This position is located in Yellowstone National Park, in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. This position has two seasons; summer and winter. You will work from approximately late May through early November, and from mid January to mid March and you will be in a non-pay status for the remaining time..

Duties

Performs day-to-day or backcountry patrol operations to facilitate visitor understanding and enjoyment and to induce behavior that complies with park regulations. Negotiate with individuals or organizations to resolve conflicts, disputes or grievances. Perform emergency services to ill and injured visitors in a variety of settings. Assists with trip itinerary planning using the "Preventative Search and Rescue" concepts in both front country and back country. Provides a wide range of services to visitors including assistance with lost articles, car trouble and first aid. Provides answers to recurring questions Present informal and formal talks, guided tours to all types of audiences. Respond to visitor's inquiries for information. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. Physical Demands: The incumbent should be in excellent physical condition and be able to hike, ski and backpack long distances through rugged terrain in the park's backcountry. Project work may involve lifting moderately heavy loads and strenuous physical exertion. Incumbent may be exposed to strenuous exertion by assisting with one or more of the following emergency services (search and rescue, EMS, wildland fire, bear management Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily outdoors in a remote backcountry setting. The incumbent will be exposed to a variety of temperature extremes and climatic conditions common to the Northern Rockies. Elevation will range from 5,000 ft. to over 10,000 ft. above sea level. Extreme elevation gains or losses will be common while patrolling the backcountry with steep, rocky trails, hazardous snow fields, loose scree and talus, thick brush and blow down, and other terrain features making backcountry travel hazardous and strenuous. The incumbent may be required to camp overnight in the backcountry for extended periods of time and should be both mentally and physically prepared to cope with the inherent potential hazards associated with hiking, backcountry skiing, snowmobiling riding horses, and camping in bear country This position will be stationed at the west entrance to Yellowstone in West Yellowstone, Montana during the winter, and the Bechler region in the southwest of Yellowstone in summer. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/16/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of Specialized experience that is equivalent in level of difficult and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelo0s degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.) IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your course work and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Park Ranger, law enforcement; EMT or paramedic; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours worked per week in your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate level study in directly related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, emergency management, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts with your job application if you are qualifying based on education. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.
