Responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the work operations of the Utilities Distribution Shop in the Maintenance & Operations Section of Engineering Service at the Fort Wayne Campus which includes HVAC technicians, Boiler Plant (USROs) and Pipefitters.
Duties
The duties of the Maintenance & Operations Supervisor includes but is not limited to:
Supervises a team of that includes HVAC technicians, Boiler Plant (USROs) and Pipefitters.
Plans weekly schedule of the assigned shop employees by sequencing operations and assignments in order of importance.
Determine the priority of work tasks and whether they can be performed concurrently or must be postponed.
Motivates assigned work force to operate as one work unit to accomplish tasks.
Determines the resources required (personnel, skillsets, availability of employee, materials and equipment).
Selects individual workers from the subordinate group and assigns the particular work or task to be performed.
Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures as needed.
Implements precautions to protect patients, environment, personnel, and equipment.
Ensures that proper materials in sufficient quantities are on hand or that materials are ordered and delivered to the work site so as not to delay work.
Alters work plans and assignments as necessary to reduce or control costs and to accomplish the work of the unit as efficiently and effectively as possible. - Coordinates work efforts with appropriate personnel.
Balances workload by shifting assignments, employees, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations.
Makes occasional spot checks on jobs in progress and performs final inspections on more important jobs.
Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, requirements, and policies, and ensures deadlines and production schedules are met.
Investigates work related problems (i.e. excessive costs or low productivity) to determine root causes.
Implements corrective actions within their authority to resolve work problems.
Participates in the establishment of local policies for achieving management objectives and goals.
Develops work standards, methods, and procedures using established National Codes, VA standards, and trade work practices as guidelines.
Provides necessary inspections, documentation, follow-up action and training to meet all Joint Commission, OSHA, AWE, VACO, VISN, and required medical center safety programs.
Responsible for all personnel, union issues, and administrative matters involving assigned trade shops.
Recommends short-range, organizational, and operational improvements.
Participates in annual budget preparation.
Participates in the initial planning of future work schedules, staffing needs, estimates, and recommendations for equipment and systems, and scheduling projected work.
Maintains production reports and records.
Prepares cost estimates for assigned trade shop equipment needed.
Establishes and keeps current performance standards - Performs annual and midterm performance evaluations and determines training needs.
Sets performance goals, makes recommendations for promotion or reassignment, counsel's employees, adjusts informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and union representatives.
Initiates disciplinary action as needed.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm (Schedule may change based on the needs of the service).

Physical Requirements: This position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. This position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally is subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Work progress, inspection, and supervision requires regular and recurring exertion including walking, standing, bending, climbing, etc. Management and administrative work is typically performed in an office setting around the Engineering environment. Incumbent must have good vision and dexterity and be able to explain complex procedures to staff.
