Duties

Additional Information: Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately January thru November, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. MAJOR DUTIES: Work involves the construction, alteration, installation, repair and modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, concrete forms, walls, doors, finished paneling, window frames, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses, beams, and miscellaneous items such as workbenches, counter tops, bookcases, equipment cabinets, and computer consoles where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important. Constructs, rehabilitates, modifies and assembles from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions, structures such as framework rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trims, staircases, trusses and beams, small buildings, building interior finishing, etc., where accuracy and spacing are essential and require journeyman level skills and abilities. Repairs doors, windows, wood substitute items, exterior siding, flooring and interior fabric as necessary in the course of stabilization/restoration and to ensure completeness and structural integrity. Repairs roof sheathing and rafters as required. Fabricates duplicate replacements of deteriorated wood members such as moldings, beams, timbers and stairways. Construction of difficult angle and curved cuts must be exact. Must be able to improvise with materials and supplies available because of distance from supplier. Performs manual tasks such as loading and unloading supplies. AREA/DUTY STATION INFORMATION: Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located in the states of North Carolina and Tennessee and encompasses 800 square miles of which 95 percent are forested. The headquarters is located near the city of Gatlinburg, TN. There are 16 peaks over 6,000' in elevation and up to 90" of rainfall spread throughout the year. The Park has 10 campgrounds, 800 miles of horse and hiking trails, and 750 miles of fishable streams. The Smokies is within one day's drive for about 1/3 of the U.S. population and thus attracts 9 to 10 million visitors annually; making it the most visited, national park in the system. Climate is moderate with average lows in the summer in the 60's and highs in the 80's and 90's and average lows in winter between 20 and 30 with highs in the 50's. Snowfall averages range from 5" in Gatlinburg, TN, to 11" in Bryson City, NC. Within Great Smoky Mountains National Park there are 514,000 acres, approximately 350 miles of road, 900 miles of surface and graded trails, 65 miles of Lake Fontana shoreline, 15 schedules cemetery visits across Fontana, 500 buildings and structures, 35 water system, 30 sewer systems, 10 major campgrounds, 11 picnic areas, various other utility systems, heating system, 88 historic buildings, 150 cemeteries, a radio system to include 9 - remote repeater sites, 74 housing units in three districts. Within the parks boundaries, there are two states, five counties, three congressional districts, five electrical suppliers and three water/sewer utility suppliers.
